Match a network of large-employer software postings employer-by-employer and title-by-title and two facts sit side by side. Hold the employer mix constant and the average description barely moves — the late-winter and midsummer centroids land closer together than two random halves of either window, well below the drift threshold. Leave the mix in and the raw distance is nearly three times that noise floor, because which employers were hiring shifted. So the honest headline is two-part: within employers the software description did not drift; the employer mix did. What else moves is specific and small — a suggestive tilt toward cloud-native tooling, far more ads that mention AI than require it, a mild nudge from onsite toward hybrid — and the whole comparison straddles two greyed ingest months and a half-finished July, so it is exploratory context, not a seasonal verdict.

In June the jobs report showed restaurants shedding work. Across one applicant-tracking network — 97% of this corpus — the food-service share of new postings fell short of its normal climb into summer. A modest, carefully bounded shortfall, and five companies behind much of the map.

Across one applicant-tracking network — 93–99% of this corpus — one in five new job ads referenced AI this spring. But two in three of those ads asked for no AI skill at all, and roughly one in 140 was an actual AI job. The gap between what employers say about AI and what they hire for is the finding.

Sort a network of large-employer job postings by company size and mid-sized firms appear to demand AI skills most — 10.0% of their new openings, against 8.1% at the largest employers and 3.9% at the smallest. But the mid-market lead is an occupation-mix artifact: hold occupation mix constant and large and mid-sized employers are tied, and in computing and finance the giants lead. The one gap that survives every control is the smallest firms', who trail by nearly four points even within the same broad occupations.

Three clean months of one applicant-tracking network are not a forecast. But they are enough to write down what the software-engineering job is becoming — its postings a rising share, its descriptions absorbing AI, its entry rung thin — and to name, in advance, which numbers in next quarter's data would tell us which of three futures is arriving.
